HANDS-ON HOUSTON: COAT-OF-ARMS SHIELDS

Time
Saturday, September 4, 2021 from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm
Location
Houston Center for Contemporary Craft
4848 Main St. (Map)

As we kick off our 20th anniversary celebration, join HCCC for a return to in-person programming with Hands-on Houston in the Craft Garden! Design and create your own coat of arms on a shield in this activity inspired by the current exhibition, Suited Up: Contemporary Armor Making in Texas. Choose colors, an animal, and family motto to create a coat of arms that represents your bravest self and prepares you for any adventure.  Then, using cardboard, hot glue, and paint, assemble a shield with help from HCCC staff and volunteers. Even the bravest craftsperson can use a shield!

Artists from Suited Up will be wearing their own costume creations at this festive event, and kids are encouraged to join in the fun by wearing their favorite costumes inspired by action heroes or video-game characters. Top costumes will be eligible for prizes.

Note: activity will take place outdoors, rain or shine, in the HCCC Craft Garden and is on a first-come, first-served basis, while supplies last.

HANDS-ON HOUSTON is a free drop-in event held the first Saturday of every month. Each month, a teaching artist demonstrates a craft related to the current exhibitions. Families and children of all ages are welcome to come any time between 11 AM and 3 PM and participate in a 15 – 20 minute activity. Materials are provided. This program supports HCCC’s mission to advance education about the process, product, and history of craft. Learn more here.
