This month, mix and match a selection of fabric to create your own uniquely patterned magnet, inspired by quilting blocks and the work of Joy Ude. Ude’s work is grounded in the rich traditions of West African textiles and featured in the new exhibition, 9ja Vision: The Fiber and Mixed-Media Work of Joy O. Ude.

**Pick up your HOH To Go kit at HCCC, and then watch a live demonstration of this project by exhibiting artist Joy Ude at 2:00 PM CDT, June 5th, on HCCC’s Facebook Live page. Ude will also discuss her process and inspirations behind her artwork.**

Historically, quilts were sewn by hand, but because it can be difficult to sew a large quilt, smaller blocks were made. These smaller blocks of fabric could be made in a repeating pattern or variety of patterns, which were then sewn together to form the whole quilt. In this project, learn to identify different types of quilting patterns, and combine a range of fabrics to create your own composition. Use the ones provided in the kit, or incorporate your own favorite textiles and swatches into your design. Your finished piece will be ready to be displayed on any magnetic surface!

ABOUT HOH TO GO

HOH To Go activity kits can be picked up and used by the whole family. Kits are available on a first-come, first-served basis, while supplies last. Limit four kits per family. Designed for ages 5+, kits include materials and detailed instructions to guide you and your family through each month’s activity. Just like regular Hands-on Houston events, HOH To Go takes place on the first Saturday of every month and is free to the public.

Kits can be picked up at HCCC from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Just pull into the parking lot behind the HCCC building (off Travis and Rosedale Streets), and let a staff member know how many children will be participating in the activity. HCCC staff will then safely deliver a kit to your car for you to take home and enjoy!  When you’ve completed the activity, share your projects with #craftwithhccc, or tag us at @crafthouston. We’ll share some of our favorites in our social media posts!

HOH To Go is generously supported by a grant from Texas Women for the Arts (TWA), a program of the Texas Cultural Trust.
