Image of Hands on Houston to go pick up

“Should we cancel Hands-on Houston Spring Break?” This was our question in the days leading up to March 16th, when Houston Center for Contemporary Craft closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. When we made that decision, we did not foresee that we would remain closed through October 14th or that, within the week, we would pivot to offering all of our educational programming virtually.

But, with our small, incredibly talented and nimble staff, we were able to offer 33 how-to craft activities, 24 exhibition spotlights, 17 behind-the-scenes studio tours, and more—all free to the public—during our seven-month closure. Families who came each month for Hands-on Houston, the Center’s free craft-making event for all ages, found new ways to experiment with craft at home, with projects like tattooing bananas or rust-dyeing fabric. And, now, we’ve launched Hands-on Houston To Go, allowing families to pick up supplies and instructions from HCCC to complete at home. This fall, we hope you’ll check out HOH to Go for yourself, and explore binary coding through beaded jewelry or create your own holiday wrapping paper using scratch-foam printing.

Hands-on Houston is just one example of the free public arts programming that HCCC provides, ensuring there are no financial barriers for our audience. Now that we have reopened to the public with timed reservations, limited hours, and new safety protocols, we are excited for you to visit our galleries and residents in person. And none of this could have happened without the confidence and support of people like you.

When you give to the Annual Fund Drive, you reinforce our dedication to craft and our drive to keep the arts accessible for everyone. Our Board of Directors has kicked off the campaign with a lead pledge of $25,000. Please join them in supporting the 2020 Annual Fund Drive to ensure that these programs continue to delight and engage audiences of all ages.
