Crafting a Legacy for Houston Center for Contemporary Craft

April 16, 2010

The River Oaks Country Club ballroom was packed with extraordinary women and their admirers Wednesday for the Crafting a Legacy luncheon benefiting the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft.

Chairs Phyllis Childress, Carrin Patman, Lynn Baird and Susan L. Lawhon outdid themselves, luring 430 craft aficionados to the beyond-sold-out luncheon to honor three pairs of mother-daughter teams who have worked tirelessly to make HCCC one of the Museum District’s true gems.

The crowd rose to its feet to cheer Sara Morgan and Catherine Morgan, Anne Lamkin Kinder and Kara Kinder Howes, and Kathyrn Rabinow and Sarah Rabinow Pesikoff. Museum of Fine Arts, Houston Director Peter C. Marzio reminded guests that the honorees are carrying on a long Bayou City tradition of visionary women — Ima Hogg, Sarah Campbell Blaffer and Caroline Wiess Law among them — who have taken the lead in Houston’s cultural enrichment.

Meanwhile, the luncheon offered a perfect opportunity to shop for fine craft, as the beautiful table centerpiece artworks were all for sale courtesy of HCCC’s Asher Gallery.

In the crafty crowd: emcee Melanie Lawson and John Guess Jr., Bill Arning, Jana Arnoldy, Gracie Cavnar, Franci Crane, Frances Marzio, Judy Nyquist, Omar Angel Perez and Clint Willour.
