OVERVIEW

This summer, join HCCC for week-long virtual craft camps for kids between the ages of 5 and 12. Virtual Craft Camp is designed to encourage creativity, experimentation, and self-expression, while introducing kids to a variety of craft materials and processes. This year, camp options include one track recommended for 5 – 8 years old and another recommended for 9 – 12 years old.

Younger kids will tour various craft processes in our mixed-media camp, focusing on nature-inspired projects such as natural dyeing, paper-mache birds, and found-plant weavings. Older children will jump into an in-depth exploration of wearable craft. Projects include polymer-clay charm bracelets, designing and embroidering patches, and repeating-pattern printing on fiber.

HOW DOES VIRTUAL CRAFT CAMP WORK?

  • Campers will receive a kit with the materials for the week and can participate whenever is best for your family during the day.
  • Each day, pre-recorded videos will lead campers through looking and critically thinking about craft and hands-on projects. Explore the plants in HCCC’s Craft Garden, and visit our resident artists’ studios from the comfort of your home.
  • Experienced teaching artists will guide campers through our art-making activities and will be available to answer any technical questions.
  • Projects are designed for campers to work independently; however, at times, your child might need additional support. For younger campers, we recommend parent help.
  • HCCC staff are available to answer your questions throughout the week.
  • The week culminates with a Zoom Show & Tell, where each camper will be able to show off their favorite camp project and chat with other campers!
  • Each kit will include all materials and a printed book of instructions for each project. Kits can be picked up at HCCC anytime during public hours the week before your camp or shipped to you for an additional cost of $15. (See Kit Pick-up/Shipping Information below.)

Dive into the world of wearable craft in this camp aimed at 9 – 12 year olds. Campers will explore and discuss how contemporary craft artists make works of art that are meant to be worn. Throughout the week, they will experiment with various mediums, such as polymer clay, paper, beads, and felt, to create their own handmade wearable art. Campers can practice their design skills by learning how to create a repeating-pattern design on fabric and use embroidery skills to make a patch for a jacket or bag. The kits provide all materials needed for the projects, including an embroidery hoop that your child can continue to use after camp!
