Please join Houston Center for Contemporary Craft and other groups for a day of activities exploring Chinese culture at Asia Society Texas Center’s Family Day.  HCCC will present a special HANDS-ON HOUSTON activity:  Chinese Block Print Kites.

Kites are an important icon of Chinese history and culture, and kite flying is now a popular pastime worldwide. Traditionally, Chinese kites were made with a bamboo frame and a silk or paper sail.  The kites were elaborately decorated with Chinese motifs, such as birds, fish and dragons.  Annabel Richardson, HCCC volunteer, will guide participants in making a simple sled-shaped frame and sail, using bamboo skewers and translucent colored paper.  To decorate and personalize your kite design, you will add tails using ribbon and print a Chinese motif on the sail using a simplified version of traditional Chinese wood-block printing.  Families and children of all ages are welcome.

*Pick up a free admission voucher at HANDS-ON HOUSTON at HCCC on July 7.
