This month, please join fiber artist, Delaney Smith, and volunteers from the Surface Design Association to create beautifully patterned handkerchiefs with simple resist techniques and indigo dye, one of the oldest plant-based dyes. Participants will learn several shibori techniques to create intricate patterns by twisting, folding, and tying a cotton handkerchief in different ways. After each piece is dipped into a dye vat and wrung out, get ready to be surprised! The indigo will oxidize as the handkerchief unfolds, turning the cloth from green to a deep blue and revealing the unique patterns you have created.

HANDS-ON HOUSTON is a free drop-in event held the first Saturday of every month. Each month, a teaching artist demonstrates a craft related to the current exhibitions. Families and children of all ages are welcome to come any time between 11 AM and 3 PM and participate in a 15-20 minute activity. Materials are provided. This program supports HCCC’s mission to advance education about the process, product and history of craft.

Please Note: Due to increased attendance, the hands-on activities are now held outside, in the Craft Garden. In the event of heavy rain, the activities will be cancelled.
