Join HCCC and Sandra Zalman, associate professor of art history at the University of Houston, for a lecture about Surrealism’s affinities with craft. Testing assumptions by changing the properties of our experience, the Surrealists revealed how common objects could become conduits for exploring both the absurdity and the marvelousness of everyday life. Professor Zalman will analyze the works of artists Salvador Dali, Rene Magritte, Marcel Duchamp and Meret Oppenheim as they relate to the current exhibition, Treachery of Material: The Surrealist Impulse in Contemporary Craft.

Sandra Zalman, PhD, is associate professor of art history at the University of Houston. She is the author of the book, Consuming Surrealism in American Culture: Dissident Modernism, which won the SECAC Award for Excellence in Research and Publication. Her research has been supported with grants from the American Council of Learned Societies, the American Association of University Women, and the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. She has lectured nationally and internationally, most recently in Paris at a conference exploring Surrealism in the United States.
