Join HCCC for the return of our HANDS-ON HOUSTON FAMILY FESTIVAL, a free community event for families and visitors of all ages.

This year, the festival celebrates recycling and the fall exhibition, CraftTexas 2022, with hands-on making and food and refreshments from Moon Rooster food truck. Visitors can also explore family-friendly events at neighboring arts organizations, Lawndale Art Center and Houston Met Dance.

  • Discover how craft artists use recycled materials in their art by exploring the fall exhibition, CraftTexas 2022
  • Learn about upcycling and reuse through these hands-on activities:

Festival goers are encouraged to triple their fun with free events at neighboring arts organizations, Lawndale Art Center (4912 Main St.) and Houston Met Dance (4916 Main St.).

Lawndale will activate its fall 2022 season, including performances by artists featured in Lo que me queda de tu amor (What’s left of your love for me) in the Cecily E. Horton Gallery from 1 – 4 PM. Outside in the Mary E. Bawden Sculpture Garden, artist Cindee Travis Klement will share seeds, cuttings, and knowledge about her social sculpture, Symbiosis, spreading the ethos of how to restore ecological balance in your own backyard. Additionally, Trees For Houston will be giving away a few hundred native trees on behalf of this exhibition.

Houston Met Dance will offer community movement classes at 12:30, 1:15, and 2 pm, during which a dance artist will lead the group through a process of creating and exploring dance based on the theme of recycling. In the upstairs studio, younger family members can join Express Children’s Theater for a Single Person Storytelling event based on monarch butterflies. Visitors can also enjoy pop-up performances throughout the space.

PARKING: The HCCC parking lot will be blocked off for activities, but limited parking is available at Lawndale Art Center and street parking is available nearby.

The HANDS-ON HOUSTON FAMILY FESTIVAL is a super-sized version of HANDS-ON HOUSTON, a free craft-activity open house on the first Saturday of every month (11 AM – 3 PM). Each month, a teaching artist demonstrates a craft related to current exhibitions and events at HCCC. Families and children of all ages are welcome, and materials are provided.

Hands-on Houston is generously supported by Strake Foundation.
