Presented in celebration of Houston Center for Contemporary Craft’s 25th “silver” anniversary, A Material Inheritance examines silver as material and metaphor. The most reflective element on Earth, silver has transformed the ways in which humans perceive, record, and understand the world. It is the material through which cultures have learned to see and remember themselves. Its exceptional optical and metallurgical properties made possible advances in mirror-making, photography, and scientific instrumentation, while its weight, density, and malleability established it as a prime medium for currency, ceremonial objects, jewelry, and treasured heirlooms. Looking beyond the material’s status as a precious metal, the exhibition considers how silver has shaped systems of knowledge, value, and cultural exchange across centuries and continents. Presented on the occasion of HCCC’s milestone anniversary, A Material Inheritance employs silver as both subject and lens, inviting reflection on the institution’s past while considering the evolving future of contemporary craft.
Featuring artists Shane R. Hendren, Edward Lane McCartney, Jaydan Moore, Leah Ying Lin, Anjali Srinivasan, and others, the exhibition presents works spanning traditional metalsmithing and jewelry making as well as experimental glass, ceramic, and kinetic media practices that reveal silver’s remarkable conceptual and material range. Across these works, silver emerges as both substance and witness: a material shaped by histories of extraction, trade, migration, labor, and devotion yet continually transformed through artistic experimentation. The exhibition positions silver as an active cultural agent that not only preserves histories but continually refracts and reimagines them.
