Did you know our monthly Hands-on Houston event is one of the longest running, free art programs in the city? HCCC provides a variety of highly regarded kid-friendly and multi-generational learning opportunities both on site and in the community to support its mission to advance education about the process, product, and history of craft.
CAMP DATES
Session 1: June 16 – 20
Session 2: June 23 – 29
Session 3: July 7 – 11
Session 4: July 14 – 18
Join HCCC for week-long Craft Camps for ages 5 – 9. Campers will explore various materials and processes in contemporary craft, including projects in our Craft Garden. Kids will practice critical thinking skills through conversations in the galleries with teaching artists and learn how to look at and talk about works of art. Through individual and group projects, they will investigate materials such as clay, fiber, and metal. Camp capacity is limited to a maximum of 17 kids per session.
Campers will begin the week by making their own sketchbooks and exploring our resident artist studios. Projects include jewelry making, natural fabric dyeing, polymer-clay miniatures, ceramic self-portraits, weaving, and papermaking. Camps are designed to encourage creativity, experimentation, and self-expression, while introducing various craft techniques. Each day includes time in the galleries, an hour lunch break, and hands-on studio projects.
Participants who provide written notice of cancellation to education@crafthouston.org two weeks before the camp date will receive a 50% refund of their camp registration fees. No refunds will be issued after this date, including participants who miss all or partial programs due to illness. Houston Center for Contemporary Craft reserves the right to cancel any program due to minimum enrollment, inclement weather, or unforeseen circumstances, in which case a full refund will be issued. Cancellations are official upon receipt of confirmation from Houston Center for Contemporary Craft.
Houston Center for Contemporary Craft invites teens to learn about contemporary craft by visiting HCCC, attending Hands-on Houston, volunteering for events, and attending workshops.
Volunteering: Teens ages 15 and up can volunteer to lead crafts at our monthly program Hands-on Houston events. Learn more about volunteering.
Internship: Each summer, HCCC offers a Craft Camp Internship. The Craft Camp Intern works with children ages 5 – 9 and gains hands-on experience using a variety of teaching skills. They observe and assist Craft Camp teachers and facilitate gallery activities, art projects, and games. Under the guidance of education staff, interns also have the opportunity to lead short lessons and activities. The internship opportunity is usually advertised in the spring.
