10 free things to do with your kids during the summer

May 29, 2015

Crafting at home is all fun and games until there’s a permanent glitter film on your floors. Take your aspiring artists out to Hands-On Houston, the free family craft days at the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, which run 11 a.m.-3 p.m. on the first Saturday of each month. There, they can create an art project to take home. “Every month it’s a different medium,” says education director Miriam Mendoza, ticking off projects, including indigo-dyed handkerchiefs, metal pendants and wooden race cars. Once you’re done with the crafts, which take about 10 to 15 minutes, check out the exhibition “Crafting A Continuum: Rethinking Contemporary Craft,” which runs through Aug. 29. Kids will love the bicycle-shaped basket, Mendoza promises. The center, 4848 Main, is just one of many free museums around town. Others include the Menil Collection, Rothko Chapel, Art Car Museum, Contemporary Art Museum Houston, Lawndale Art Center, Station Museum of Contemporary Art, Blaffer Art Museum, the Museum of Printing History, Rice Gallery, Houston Center for Photography and the Czech Cultural Center.
