Just in time for April Fool’s Day, the Asher Gallery is proud to present a very special trunk show with Iowa City artist, Connie Roberts.  Nearly everyone in Houston has at least one of her charming, funny, and occasionally risqué whistles.  Although her work is immensely popular, Connie is one of the most down-to-earth artists we know.  “I have a BA in art history and an MA and MFA in painting, so I’m not qualified to be a folk artist, but my work is generally referred to as folk, because that is what it looks like. I don’t mind how people label me the “Whistle Lady.”  This gives me a category all my own, and all of my sculptures do have a whistle somewhere in them.  I have loved woodworking ever since I was a kid, messing around in the garage with my dad and older brother.  I have equally loved things that are humorous, from Mad Magazine to Monty Python to the evening news.”

All of Connie’s work shows a lighthearted spirit and a quirky, punny humor. With pieces like “Golden Ruler” and “Dog Park Porta-Potty” and prices ranging from $12 to $2,400, there really is something for everyone.  Please join us for a special reception welcoming Connie to Houston on Friday, March 28, 5:30 – 8 PM, or stop by throughout the weekend to shop and visit with the artist (Saturday, 11 AM – 4 PM, and Sunday, 1 – 4 PM).
