Empty Bowls

Empty Bowls Houston is a grassroots effort by artists, skilled crafters, students, and teachers dedicated to alleviating hunger in the greater Houston area. Since its inception 13 years ago, Empty Bowls Houston has raised more than $745,000 for the Houston Food Bank, enabling them to provide over 2.2 million meals. Empty Bowls Houston is presented by Whole Foods Market and implemented locally by Houston-area ceramists and artists, Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, and the Houston Food Bank.

For a minimum $25 donation, attendees have the pleasure of selecting a bowl from hundreds of one-of-a-kind, hand-crafted bowls donated by Houston-area ceramists and craft artists and then receiving a simple lunch of soup donated by Whole Foods Market that is freshly prepared by Houston Food Bank Community Kitchen. Pottery and woodturning demonstrations and live music will be featured. The empty bowls serve as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the Houston community and around the world.

In the parking lot, join HCCC staff and volunteers to experiment with clay.  Take inspiration from the Empty Bowls vessels on view in the galleries, and try your hand at making your own ceramic piece. Discover how clay feels, and learn how to sculpt and mold it, as you investigate ways to add texture using a variety of ceramic tools.  Note:  The clay works will not be fired. The activity is on a first-come, first-served basis, while supplies last.

In the event of rain, all outdoor activities will be cancelled.
