Join Houston Center for Contemporary Craft for Craft Social, a night of making and exploring contemporary craft over conversation and refreshments.
This month, we will investigate hand lettering in conjunction with the current exhibition, For Hire: Contemporary Sign Painting in America. Explore a condensed history of lettering, from scribes to printing press to modern day, with a presentation by graphic designer Anthony Reynolds. Dive into widely used fonts from the past 70 years, and find inspiration for your own hand-lettered signs! Then, practice your lettering basics and perfect the art of mixing fonts with artist Lauren Christlieb. Learn how to add embellishments and draw banners with different materials, such as markers, pens, and watercolors. Finally, put your new skills to use by creating a sign or a greeting card. Throughout the evening, explore artworks on view in the exhibition, and discover how artists from around the country are preserving the art of hand lettering.
Lauren Christlieb is a Houston-based artist who received her bachelor’s in art at the University of Texas at Dallas in 2013. She completed her Masters of Fine Art degree at the University of Houston in May this year. Lauren’s current body of work explores memory through objects and family relationships. She has recently shown work at University of Houston, College of the Mainland, University of Texas at Dallas, and Texas Woman’s University. Lauren currently resides in The Woodlands area with her dog Zoey.
Anthony Reynolds is a graphic designer based in Houston and currently works at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. He began creating flyers and merchandise for local bands at age 16 in Austin, Texas, and quickly developed a passion for design. This lead to attending Texas State University and earning a communication design degree through their rigorous program. Today, he works with local musicians and artists, alongside his work at MFAH.
Craft Social takes place on the third Thursday evening of each month and is a fun way for adults to explore contemporary craft through other disciplines and media. These casual, social events emphasize experimentation, curiosity, and innovation. Visitors are encouraged to drop by and participate. All events are free and on a first-come first-served basis. Capacity is limited.
