Hands-on Houston Henquin rope image

This month, join HCCC resident artist Priscilla Dobler Dzul to work with fibers of henequen from Yucatán, Mexico.

Learn to dye and braid henequen, a fiber extracted from the leaves of an agave plant found chiefly in Yucatán. This fiber, referred to as “the green gold” during its economic boom in the 19th – 20th century, is used for the shipping industry throughout the world.

Discover how to dye henequen with natural dyes traditionally used in Oaxaca, Mexico, such as walnut, pomegranate shells, and cochineal. Then, learn how to braid the fiber to make your own rope. Leave with a new perspective on natural dyeing and its connection to Mexico’s diverse craft community.

Note: This activity will take place outside, weather permitting, and is on a first-come, first-served basis, while supplies last. The event is subject to change or cancellation in response to current COVID-19 conditions. All participants must wear a mask when inside the building and practice social distancing during the event.

HANDS-ON HOUSTON is a free drop-in event held the first Saturday of every month. Each month, a teaching artist demonstrates a craft related to the current exhibitions. Families and children of all ages are welcome to come any time between 11 AM and 3 PM and participate in a 15 – 20 minute activity. Materials are provided. This program supports HCCC’s mission to advance education about the process, product, and history of craft. Learn more here.

Hands-on Houston is generously supported by Strake Foundation.
