Explore the decorative pottery technique of sgraffito with ceramic artist Gabo Martinez! Find inspiration in the artist’s solo exhibition, Gabo Martinez: The Land of Flowers, featuring ceramics and printmaking, and make your own decorated bowls. Sgraffito (from the Italian “to scratch”) is a pottery decorating technique achieved by applying layers of color (underglazes or colored slips) to leather-hard pottery, then scratching through the layers to create contrasting images, patterns, and textures which reveal the clay color beneath. Participants will learn the basics of this technique as they design a decorative pattern that will be carved into premade bowls. Each participant will decorate two, unfired leather-hard bowls.

Please note that all projects will be fired in the kiln and ready to be picked up after July 15, 2023.
