Namgwon Lyu is an artist and craftsman living in South Korea. He works with traditional Korean ottchil lacquer. Based on lacquer produced in the Namwon region by his teacher, master artisan Park Kang-yong, he reinterprets traditional techniques into contemporary forms and functional objects.
These vessels were crafted using the traditional Korean woodturning technique, called Namwon. Namwon is a region in Korea where lacquerware tradition has developed over time, rooted in the historical context of Silsangsa Temple. Based on these traditional lacquer techniques, Lyu is applying inherited craftsmanship to contemporary forms, combining functionality with sculptural presence.
