Join Houston Center for Contemporary Craft for Craft Social, a night of making and exploring contemporary craft over conversation and refreshments.

This month, we will explore the winter solstice, the day with the shortest period of daylight and the longest night of the year. The winter solstice is celebrated by many cultures around the world as the beginning of the return of the sun, as well as the official beginning of winter.

Guest speaker Astrid Marklund, Honorary Consul General of Sweden, will join us to discuss the Swedish traditions around midvinter (midwinter) and the celebration of Lucia, a major feast day in Scandinavia that celebrates light. Discover why the return of the light is one of the most important features of midwinter festivals.

Learn to weave your own paper heart basket, a Scandinavian craft used in Santa Lucia Day celebrations, and make your own candle to light the longest night of the year!

About Craft Social
Craft Social takes place on the third Thursday evening of each month and is a fun way for adults to explore contemporary craft through other disciplines and media. These casual, social events emphasize experimentation, curiosity, and innovation. Visitors are encouraged to drop by and participate. All events are free and on a first-come first-served basis. Capacity is limited.
