Join Houston Center for Contemporary Craft for Cup of Cups, a high-energy, wheel-throwing and elimination-round competition celebrating the skill, speed, and creativity of artists working in clay!

Inspired by Houston hosting seven world championship soccer matches, this four-round challenge invites ceramicists of all experience levels to test their throwing abilities before a live audience and distinguished panel of judges: artists Jeff Forster, Abi Ogle, Angel Oloshove, and Meghan Rutzebeck. Competitors will face off across a series of increasingly difficult challenges designed to highlight precision, intuition, and imagination at the wheel. Spectators are welcome to attend, cheer on their favorite potters, and celebrate Houston’s vibrant ceramics community! At the conclusion of the event, judges will award the top competitors during a lively closing ceremony in the galleries.

Event will take place in the HCCC parking lot (or inside in case of rain). Parking available at Lawndale Art Center or on nearby streets.

COMPETITION REGISTRATION
Registration to compete in Cup of Cups is now full. If you’d like to be placed on the waitlist, complete this google form.
All participants will be provided with clay and wheels and should not bring personal tools unless otherwise specified.

The competition includes four competitive rounds, detailed below:

ROUND 1: TALLEST CYLINDER
Competitors will throw a centered cylinder reaching for maximum height and stability. Judging criteria will include height, structure, and technical control.

ROUND 2: BLIND THROW
In this test of muscle memory and touch, participants will throw while blindfolded, relying solely on embodied knowledge of the clay. Scores will be based on form, proportion, and overall success of the vessel.

ROUND 3: MATCHING OR NESTING SET
Competitors must throw a matching or nesting set of vessels that demonstrate consistency in scale, proportion, and design. Judging will focus on symmetry and craftsmanship.

ROUND 4: TROPHY GOBLET FINALE
For the finale, competitors will create a celebratory trophy goblet inspired by the long history of championship cups—from ancient athletic prizes to contemporary global sporting trophies. This final round emphasizes creativity, concept, and theatrical flair, culminating in the crowning of this year’s Cup of Cups champion!

Cup of Cups is generously underwritten by Scott & Judy Nyquist.

Clay generously provided by the Ceramic Store of Houston. Beer sponsored by Saint Arnold Brewing Company.
