This October, embrace the spirit of the season by diving into the craft of traditional broom making. The workshop will start in the HCCC Craft Garden, where we will harvest the broomcorn–a durable and flexible sorghum grass–that is cultivated onsite. Then, with the expert guidance of former resident artist Molly Koehn, you’ll learn the time-honored techniques of binding and shaping broomcorn. By the end of the workshop, you’ll not only gain a profound appreciation for this historic craft but also take home a beautifully crafted and functional hand broom, also known as a whisk broom, to cherish for years to come.
Note: The workshop takes place in person and inside the HCCC building. Space is limited to a maximum of 15 participants. Participants will go home with one or two hand brooms, depending on how quickly they complete the project.
