Join us this month to create a beautiful greeting card made from silk painting, using the “resist” technique. The origins and use of silk are said to date back to ancient China, where a rich history of silk painting developed. Resists, such as the wax technique of Batik, are applied to the silk before painting to stop the different colors from bleeding. Annabel Richardson, HCCC volunteer, will guide participants in using the Serti technique using water-based Gutta resist to create pictures, symbols and intricate patterns on their fabric. After participants create and draw their own designs on silk, the resist will be applied to the outline of the design and silk paint added for color. The finished piece will then be attached to cardstock to create an original greeting card.
HANDS-ON HOUSTON is a free craft-activity open house on the first Saturday of every month. Each month, a teaching artist demonstrates a craft related to the current exhibitions. We provide the materials, and you provide the creativity! Families and children of all ages are welcome, and materials are provided. This program supports HCCC’s mission to advance education about the process, product and history of craft.
