Please join HCCC for HANDS-ON HOUSTON on Saturday, June 7th. This month, join HCCC Education Director, Miriam Mendoza, for this fun soapy event. Participants will create their own felted soap by covering a small bar with strips of raw wool, dyed in bright colors. Using the wet-felting technique, participants will add warm water, as they rub the wool-wrapped soap with their fingers. The combination of heat, soap, and friction make the wool fibers interlock and shrink to fit perfectly around the soap. This wooly bar has natural antibacterial properties and doubles as a scrubby!

During the event, former resident artist, Barbara Kile, will demonstrate wet felting. Barbara has been felting for over 15 years. She has exhibited her work internationally and taught numerous felting classes. Come meet her and watch her work!

HANDS-ON HOUSTON is a free craft-activity open house on the first Saturday of every month. Each month, a teaching artist demonstrates a craft related to the current exhibitions. Families and children of all ages are welcome, and materials are provided. This program supports HCCC’s mission to advance education about the process, product and history of craft.
