Design, paint and dye a beautiful silk bandana in this natural dyeing workshop with Molly Koehn.
Color is growing all around us this spring! Plants, vegetables, roots, and even bugs can be the source of many surprising natural dyes. Join HCCC former resident artist Molly Koehn to learn how to craft natural dyes, derived from organic materials such as onion skins, avocado peels, and turmeric. Experiment with a variety of colors and patterns by painting with thickened mordants, substances used in natural dyeing to create lasting colors on cloth. Mordants can shift the tones and saturation levels of natural dyes, so that a wide range of colors can be created in a single dye vat–or even on a single piece of cloth!
Participants will design, paint, and dye one bandana and learn tips to repeat the process at home. Don’t forget to check out the Craft Garden at HCCC, which features a wide variety of natural plant materials used for dyeing.
Note: This event is subject to change or cancellation in response to current COVID-19 conditions. The workshop takes place in person and inside the HCCC building. Space is limited to a maximum of 15 participants.
