Texas Master James Watkins

Join artist and educator James C. Watkins in conversation with Kathryn Hall, curator at Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, on Facebook Live, as part of Texas Talks Art.

James is the most recent recipient of HCCC’s Texas Master Award that recognizes career artists, professionals, and educators who have made a significant impact on the field of craft in Texas. With over 40 years of experience working with clay, he has built an extraordinary career as a ceramicist and an educator, based in Lubbock, Texas. James and Kathryn will discuss some of the highlights of his career and travels and take a close look at some of the ceramics featured in HCCC’s current exhibition, Texas Master Series: James C. Watkins, with a focus on his double-walled forms and use of alternative firing techniques.

ABOUT TEXAS TALKS ART

Texas Talks Art is a multi-institutional initiative intended to both introduce the work of artists across the state of Texas to a wider audience and to foster collaboration among local non-profit arts organizations. Taking the form of virtual 30-minute lunchtime talks, the series features 50 Texas artists and artist collectives in conversation with 50 Texas curators, beginning in January, 2021, and continuing throughout the year. Built on a belief in the need to work collectively to support the remarkable and diverse community of artists living and working in Texas, Texas Talks Art features an intergenerational roster of artists working across mediums and at differing points in their careers. The series encourages dialogue among arts professionals and emphasizes the broad range of concerns and questions that animate Texas-based artists. The free virtual talks will take place on Tuesdays, at 12 p.m. CST, and will be recorded and archived.  For a list of upcoming programs and more information, please visit texastalksart.org. Join the conversation using #txtalksart on social media.
