Coiled Basket Workshop with Joy Ude

Registration is full. To be added to the waitlist, please contact us at education@crafthouston.org.

Join exhibiting artist Joy Ude live on Zoom to explore the basics of basketry coiling and stitching techniques by transforming cotton cording into colorful mini-coiled baskets. Coiled basketry is built by arranging concentric circles of cording, stitched together using yarn. Experiment with color blocking using various colors of yarn, and create simple beautiful patterns throughout your basket. Become familiar with how these techniques are used to make items such as vessels and blankets by cultures around the world.  This project sometimes takes more than two hours to complete, but you will learn all of the necessary skills to finish your baskets on your own. What will your baskets hold?

Joy Ude’s practice is grounded in the rich traditions of West African textiles, and she references that material history as she weaves personal, familial, and historical narratives into her work. We will take a brief virtual tour of the Texas-based artist’s current exhibition, 9ja Vision: The Fiber & Mixed-Media Work of Joy O. Ude, before diving into this project!
