Adam Knoche is a ceramic artist living in the USA. He is drawn to the color, texture, and feel of clay. The way in which clay records the mark of the touch shows a raw gesture of movement of the maker. This emotive connection to object making predates historical record keeping and holds its roots to the deepest parts of human nature and desire.
Knoche’s plates and bowls are made by ram-pressing and pulverizing earth-toned clay bodies into shape. The surface is tooled with handmade wooden ribs to create opportunities for the clay to fracture, crack, and respond to the stress and tension of the heat of the firing. The plate is fired in oxidation to 1232°C. Each plate has its own primitive qualities and embodies the bare essentials of life and artistic expression.
