Explore the ceramic process by creating and glazing your own tile inspired by Roberto Lugo’s Pigeon Crib series!

Start by visiting the exhibition to discover how Lugo blends traditional European and Asian ceramic forms with contemporary imagery and personal narratives. Look closely at the details and themes that speak to you and use them as inspiration for your own design! Ceramic glaze, a glass-like coating, adds vibrant color, enhances durability, and makes surfaces waterproof after firing. First, sketch a small composition on your tile, then bring it to life using a range of glaze colors. Let Lugo’s bold storytelling and innovative style guide your own creative expression!

Note: The glazed tiles will be fired after the event and can be picked up after September 13, 2025.  Please allow 25 minutes to complete this activity. The activity will take place indoors and is on a first-come, first-served basis, while supplies last.

HANDS-ON HOUSTON is a free drop-in event held the first Saturday of every month. Each month, a teaching artist or guild demonstrates a craft related to the current exhibitions. Community members of all ages are welcome to come any time between 11 AM and 3 PM and participate in a 15 – 20-minute activity. Materials are provided. This program supports HCCC’s mission to advance education about the process, product, and history of craft. Learn more here.
