In this one-day hands-on workshop, artist Janice Jakielski will teach students a wide variety of hand-sewn fabric-manipulation techniques, including flower construction, pleating, tucking, gathering and layering materials, to create unique hair fascinators (hair adornments).  Students will have the opportunity to experiment with a large range of methods, from traditional Japanese Kanzashi folded petals to free-form intuitive designs. All materials are included but students are encouraged to bring scraps of their favorite fabrics, ribbon, feathers and other embellishments.  Workshop includes a 30-minute lunch break.

Janice Jakielski’s solo exhibition, Constructing Solitude, will be on view at HCCC January 25 – May 5, 2013, in the small gallery. Jakielski was born in Maytown, Pennsylvania, and currently lives and works in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, where she is a visiting artist at Alberta College of Art & Design. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the New York State College of Ceramic Art and Design at Alfred University and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Colorado, Boulder. Jakielski has been an artist-in-residence at numerous programs around the U.S. and has shown her distinctive work at the Seattle Design Center, Seattle, WA; The Textile Arts Center, Brooklyn, NY; Pendleton Center for the Arts, Pendleton, OR; Greenwich House Pottery, New York, NY; Vertigo Artspace, Denver, CO; and the Clay Studio, Philadelphia, PA.
