Join HCCC for this character-design workshop with illustrator and exhibiting artist Aya Kakeda.
Explore Kakeda’s work in the winter exhibition, Drawn to the Work: Illustration and Craft in Conversation, and learn about the artist’s character-design process, including how characters can be used in marketing and illustration. Design your own unique characters through illustration exercises and experimenting with multiple ways to develop a character. Then, share your designs with others and gain feedback.
This is a beginner level workshop, and all who enjoy drawing are welcome. Materials will be provided, but participants are welcome to bring their own sketchpads and drawing tools.
No experience necessary. Supplies will be provided. Space is limited, and pre-registration is required. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration fee includes instructor, materials, and administration fees. The class is for adults only (age 18 and over) and requires a minimum of 10 participants to hold.

Cancellation Policy
Workshops are subject to cancellation or change due to low enrollment. Registrants will be notified seven (14) days in advance if the workshop is cancelled by HCCC. If registrants need to cancel their reservation, they must do so at least 14 days in advance to receive a full refund. No refunds will be made for cancellations made less than two weeks prior to workshop date. To cancel your registration, email HCCC at education@crafthouston.org, so that someone on the waiting list can attend the workshop.
About Aya Kakeda
Aya Kakeda was born and raised in Tokyo, Japan. She taught at the Fashion Institute of Technology (NY) for the MFA Illustration Program and at the School of Visual Arts (NY) for the BFA Illustration Program. She is currently teaching the BFA Illustration Program full time at Maryland Institute College of Art. She has produced art for books, products, magazines, posters, and store installations from clients all over the world. Kakeda also takes her imaginary friends to travel, exhibiting in galleries and museums throughout the world. Now she draws and creates an imaginative world in Brooklyn, NY.
