Clutch City Craft surveys the craft communities that have built the infrastructure and material culture of Houston, demonstrating how traditional craft knowledge is at the heart of one of the leading industrial production centers in the nation.

The exhibition features a wide spectrum of making practices, from the artists behind centuries-old, mosaic street signs to cowboy boot makers and fiber artists who design space suits and preserve the woven interiors of NASA mission control.

The show is presented in concert with Handwork: Celebrating American Craft 2026, a national semi-quincentennial initiative organized by Craft in America and the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Handwork highlights the importance of the handmade and celebrates the diversity of the crafts that define America, bringing compelling stories and underrepresented art and artists into the spotlight.

Houston Center for Contemporary Craft galleries are dedicated to interpreting and exhibiting craft in all media and making practices. Artists on view can range from locally emerging to internationally renowned and our curatorial work surveys traditional and experimental approaches to materials.
