HCCC provides a variety of programs both on site and in the community to support our mission to advance education about the process, product, and history of craft. Informed by our exhibitions and artist residencies, we frequently host lectures, workshops, and other hands-on activities for kids and adults centered around contemporary craft. We are a popular destination for private, school, and senior groups providing free docent-led tours and optional workshops for those who schedule in advance. HCCC offers educator resources such as lesson plans and professional development opportunities for integrating craft into the classroom. Through all of these components, HCCC strives to provide a holistic experience for everyone who wants to learn about craft.
Contemporary craft connects makers, materials, and methods to create art that shapes communities and enriches daily life. Traditionally, the craft community placed great value on the functional object and classified those objects by material–in particular, clay, fiber, glass, metal, and wood. However, craft today embraces skilled individuals who experiment with many materials and methods. Makers challenge the ways in which we think about objects and how we connect to each other through object making, providing an outlet for us to express ideas, emotions, and define who we are.
Volunteering with HCCC can be a great way to learn more about contemporary craft, give back to the Houston community, and even build your skills and resume toward a future career in the arts. We are always looking for new faces to join our wonderful team of volunteers.
