During Spring Break week, join Houston Center for Contemporary Craft for hands-on making and other activities that encourage visitors of all ages to explore craft and art making. Although it’s normally closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, HCCC will be open all week for this special event.

Each morning of the week, participants can experiment with new materials, tools, and techniques through hands-on activities. Families are invited to thoroughly explore the current exhibitions, Light Charmer: Neon and Plasma in Action and Treachery of Material: The Surrealist Impulse in Craft, by spending time looking at art, talking, and sketching in the galleries with experienced docents. Visitors will also have the opportunity to explore the resident artists studios to gain insight into the inspirations and artistic processes of working artists.  HCCC Spring Break is free and open to the public.

Hands-on Activities
Hands-on activities require about 25 minutes to be completed. Activities will take place indoors and are on a first-come, first-served basis, while supplies last. Families and children of all ages are welcome to participate any time between 10 AM and 1 PM. Materials are provided.

Monday, March 12: Make Your Own Sketchbook
Participants will learn to bind their own sketchbook or journal, and use it to sketch out their next great idea or project.

Tuesday, March 13: Polymer Clay Jewelry
Participants are encouraged to express themselves by making colorful jewelry using polymer clay, cut into bold shapes.

Wednesday, March 14: Paper Marbling
Participants will experiment with the ornate form of paper decoration by adding colorful marbling.

Thursday, March 15: Weaving Bookmarks
Participants will problem solve and create a pattern by weaving a bookmark.

Friday, March 16: Abstract Wood Assemblages
Participants will build an abstract wood assemblage using a variety of shapes and sizes of wood.
